Caramelized Banana with Roasted Sweet Potato

Headnote

This is a study in quiet sweetness: the deep, earthy comfort of roasted sweet potato set against the supple perfume of banana. With only two ingredients, the discipline lies in control of heat and timing, so each element remains distinct yet harmonious. The result is simple, composed, and complete.

Recipe essentials

Dish category: Warm fruit and root vegetable dish
Cuisine or origin: Contemporary
Course type: Dessert or light breakfast
Yield: 1 serving
Serving size: 300 g
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 35 minutes
Total time: 45 minutes
Difficulty: Easy

Equipment

Small baking tray
Parchment paper
Chef’s knife
Cutting board
Oven

Ingredients

Sweet potato, peeled and cut into 240 g wedges
Banana, peeled and cut into 60 g thick slices

Method

  • 1. Heat the oven to 200°C. Line a small baking tray with parchment paper.

  • 2. Arrange the sweet potato wedges on the tray in a single layer. Roast for 30 to 35 minutes, turning once halfway through, until the flesh is tender throughout and the edges are lightly browned and concentrated in aroma.

  • 3. Add the banana slices to the tray for the final 4 to 5 minutes of roasting. They should soften, take on a glossy surface, and begin to caramelize at the edges without collapsing.

  • 4. Remove the tray from the oven and allow the components to rest for 2 minutes. The sweet potato should be yielding but intact; the banana should remain distinct, with a warm, silky texture.

  • Plating and serving

Arrange the sweet potato first, then set the banana over and around it in a deliberate line or loose cluster. Serve warm, with the contrast of dense, roasted sweetness and soft fruit clearly preserved.

    Professional notes

Roast the sweet potato fully before adding the banana; both ingredients require different exposure to heat. Keep the banana in the oven only long enough to soften and glaze. Precision here is the difference between a composed dish and a muddled one.
